Cashmere is one of the finest materials there is. Soft and warm, it wraps you in warmth—for a touch of luxury every day. To ensure you can enjoy your favorite cashmere pieces for as long as possible, proper care is essential. From washing and drying to storage—here are our best tips and tricks to make your cashmere even more beautiful. But before we get to our top tips, let’s take a look behind the scenes of this precious material.
Beautiful by Nature
Cashmere is one of the finest natural fibers in the world. It is harvested from the soft undercoat of the cashmere goat, which lives in the barren highlands of Mongolia, Tibet, and China. In these regions, the animals endure temperatures as low as -30 °C. Their undercoat serves as their natural protection—and it is precisely this undercoat that is used to create the fabric that feels so soft against the skin.
Once a year, the undercoat is gently combed out—not sheared. It takes the wool from several goats to make a single sweater—so it’s no wonder that cashmere has been considered a luxury fiber for centuries.
At Bijou les Boutiques, we place a high value on sustainably sourced cashmere fibers and fair production conditions. The cashmere used in our clothing comes from Inner Mongolia and is sourced in accordance with the Good Cashmere Standards® (GCS) and the Responsible Wool Standards (RWS) . This ensures animal welfare, fair working conditions, and fair compensation. After all, true luxury comes not only from quality, but also from responsibility.
Our Care Tips for Your Cashmere
Washing
You can wash your favorite cashmere garment either by hand or on the wool cycle in the washing machine. Important: Always use a special cashmere and wool detergent and do not exceed a water temperature of 20 °C. Gently agitate your favorite piece; do not wring it out or spin-dry it. This will keep the fibers soft, maintain the shape, and preserve your cashmere’s luxurious texture.
Drying
The golden rule: Never hang up your favorite cashmere garment—its own weight could cause it to lose its shape. Instead, lay it flat on a towel, gently blot away excess water, and carefully reshape it. Let it air dry while lying flat, and avoid the dryer whenever possible.
Ironing
Cashmere hardly wrinkles at all—so you should avoid ironing it if possible. If you do need to iron it, we recommend turning the garment inside out, setting the iron to the lowest temperature, and placing a cloth between the iron and the fabric.
ventilate
Every wash cycle puts a strain on the fibers. Often, fresh air is all it takes to freshen up your clothes. Cashmere, for example, recovers overnight, and odors disappear without any washing at all. Air out your favorite cashmere item by laying it flat at room temperature.
Store
The same rule applies here: Your cashmere prefers to be laid flat, not hung up. Fold your garment carefully and store it in the closet. If you have an open wardrobe—or especially during the summer months—we recommend storing it in a cotton bag.
Removing Stains
Time is of the essence: If your favorite cashmere item has a stain, every minute counts. Gently blot fresh stains immediately. For stubborn stains, use cold water with a wool detergent or chemical-free shampoo. For delicate or larger stains, we recommend professional cleaning.
